The Endless Vertical City
01. The City That Never Falls
When the little white puppy opened his eyes, the first thing he felt was cold metal beneath his paws.
A gentle wind passed through his soft white fur. Around him stood rusted railings, abandoned machinery, and enormous structures disappearing into the clouds.
At first, it seemed as though he had awakened on the rooftop of an impossibly tall building.
Then he walked toward the edge.
There was no ground below.
Skyscrapers clung sideways to gigantic vertical walls. Roads ran downward instead of toward the horizon. Trains moved along rails suspended thousands of meters above the distant clouds.
The puppy carefully looked over the edge.
Beneath the clouds was another city. Beneath that city was another. And far below that, countless lights continued into darkness.
The city had no visible end.
Suddenly, the platform beneath his paws began to vibrate.
The frightened puppy crouched down. But the platform was not collapsing.
It was an enormous elevator.
Slowly, silently, it began descending.
And so the puppy's journey into the endless city began.
02. The Streets on the Walls
Hundreds of levels below, the elevator finally stopped.
The doors opened onto a city where cars drove across vertical walls and people casually walked along the sides of skyscrapers.
The puppy stared in confusion.
Carefully, he placed one paw against the wall.
The world suddenly shifted.
What had been a wall now felt exactly like solid ground.
Gravity changed direction from district to district. People walked overhead. Cars passed along roads above and below him. Entire neighborhoods existed at impossible angles.
The puppy continued until he reached the center of the district.
There he discovered an enormous circular shaft.
Thousands of elevators moved through it in every direction.
One small elevator stopped directly in front of him.
Its doors opened.
There were no buttons inside.
Only a glowing symbol on the floor.

03. The Level Where Rain Falls Upward
When the doors opened again, the puppy stepped into a world where rain was moving in the wrong direction.
Millions of droplets rose from an enormous lake suspended beneath the city.
They drifted upward between skyscrapers before disappearing into distant clouds.
The puppy crossed a transparent walkway. Far beneath his paws, another enormous city could be seen through the glass.
At the center of an abandoned plaza stood an ancient machine.
As the puppy approached, the machine suddenly activated.
Blue light filled the air.
A gigantic holographic map of the vertical city appeared.
The level counter began rising.
1,000.
10,000.
100,000.
The numbers continued until the machine could no longer display them.
Then every number disappeared.
A single message remained.
There is no city at the bottom.
04. The Forest of Moving Buildings
The next district was constantly changing.
Entire skyscrapers moved along colossal rails. Streets disappeared as buildings exchanged positions. New alleys formed while old ones vanished.
The puppy looked behind him.
The road he had just crossed was already gone.
Lost among the moving towers, he noticed a faint light.
He followed it and discovered an abandoned train.
The moment he stepped inside, the doors closed.
The train accelerated downward along a vertical railway.
Thousands of buildings rushed past the windows.
Then the puppy saw something unlike anything else in the city.
A colossal pillar.
It stretched upward and downward farther than he could see.
And every layer of the city appeared to be connected to it.
05. The Pillar That Holds the City
Near the pillar, the puppy discovered a small entrance.
Behind it was not another neighborhood.
There were no homes, shops, or people.
Instead, enormous machines filled the darkness.
Gears larger than skyscrapers turned slowly. Massive mechanical shafts disappeared into the depths.
The puppy descended a narrow staircase.
Deep inside the pillar, he discovered a forgotten chamber.
Hundreds of miniature cities were displayed inside.
Some had collapsed. Some had split apart. Others had been completely flooded.
Among them stood one empty pedestal.
The number engraved upon it belonged to the city the puppy was currently exploring.
It was as if the destruction of his city had already been expected.
06. The Abandoned Level
Beyond the pillar was a city where everything still worked, yet no one remained.
Streetlights glowed. Cars stood silently on the roads. Lights remained on inside thousands of apartments.
But not a single person could be found.
The puppy walked alone through the empty streets.
Then he noticed tiny footprints in the dust.
They looked exactly like his own.
Yet layers of dust covered them. They had been there for years, perhaps much longer.
The puppy followed the footprints to an old observation deck.
There he discovered a faded photograph.
A white puppy stood in the picture.
It looked almost exactly like him.
For the first time, the puppy wondered whether this truly was his first journey through the city.
07. The City That Grows Upside Down
Farther below, skyscrapers grew downward from the ceiling.
Their towers hung above an endless abyss.
Stranger still, the buildings were growing.
Walls slowly extended. New windows appeared. Roads formed by themselves and stretched into empty space.
The puppy discovered enormous structures resembling roots connecting the buildings.
He followed one of them deeper into the city.
Then he felt something beneath his paws.
A vibration.
Thump.
Silence.
Thump.
It sounded like a heartbeat.
The puppy slowly realized that the city might not simply be a machine.
It might be alive.
08. The Ocean Beneath the Clouds
Eventually, the buildings disappeared.
In their place floated an enormous ocean.
It had no shore and no ground beneath it.
The water remained suspended in the shape of a gigantic sphere.
Skyscrapers passed directly through it. Enormous fish swam between submerged buildings.
The puppy entered through a transparent passageway.
At the center of the floating ocean stood an enormous circular gate.
Railways, roads, elevator cables, and ancient tunnels all converged upon it.
It seemed as though the entire vertical city had been constructed to lead toward this one place.
As the puppy approached, the ancient gate began to open.
09. The Oldest Gate
There was no city beyond the gate.
There was only darkness.
Then thousands of tiny lights appeared.
Inside each light existed another city.
Cities beneath oceans. Cities floating in the sky. Cities already destroyed. Cities that had not yet been built.
And among them was the endless vertical city.
The puppy finally understood.
His enormous world was only one among countless others.
Suddenly, a powerful light appeared far below.
An ancient elevator emerged from the darkness.
Its doors opened.
The puppy stepped inside.
This time, he intended to reach the true bottom.
10. Not the Bottom, but the Beginning
The elevator descended for what felt like an eternity.
The lights of the city vanished. Even the distant sounds of machinery disappeared.
At last, the doors opened.
The puppy froze.
Before him was a small green field.
Grass moved gently in the wind. A few trees stood beneath warm sunlight.
After traveling through endless metal towers and impossible machines, this ordinary landscape seemed stranger than anything he had seen.
A small house stood in the middle of the field.
Inside were ancient blueprints and forgotten records.
Long ago, there had not been enough land for everyone.
So people began building downward.
One level became ten. Ten became hundreds. Hundreds became thousands.
Centuries passed.
Eventually, the people living deep within the city forgot where their civilization had begun.
The puppy stepped outside.
Then he looked upward.
What he had believed to be the sky was almost completely covered by the enormous underside of the vertical city.
The puppy had not reached the bottom.
He had reached the place where the city had first begun.
At the edge of the field, an old road stretched toward the horizon.
For the first time, the path did not lead downward.
It led forward.
The puppy looked back at the colossal city one final time.
Then he ran toward the distant horizon.
Far behind him, a tiny crack appeared in the ground.
A faint light emerged from somewhere beneath the field.
Then another appeared.
And another.
Deep beneath the place everyone believed was the beginning, the lights of another unknown city slowly awakened.
The little white puppy's journey through the vertical city had reached its destination, but the true depths of this impossible world remained unexplored.
